Tribal House - A style of house music that focuses heavily on percussion to drive the tracks. Typically Tribal tracks contain little or no melody, but feature funky basslines and chunky beats. Tribal House DJ's include Steve Lawler and Oscar G. CD: Steve Lawler - Lights Out (Global Underground).

Progressive House - A fairly minimal style but with more melodies and more uplifting elements than Tribal House. Again chunky basslines are common, as well as swirling melodies and large breakdowns in the music. Progressive House DJ's include Sasha and John Digweed. CD: John Digweed - MMII (Bedrock)

Deep House - A slightly slower and funkier blend of House music, featuring smooth basslines and often lots of strong vocals. Also several instruments are used (primarily Piano, Horns, and Strings) for a more rounded sound. Deep House DJ's include Miguel Migs and DHM. CD: Miguel Migs - Nude Tempo One (Naked Music).

Tech House - A style similar to Tribal and Progressive House, but with a slightly harder edge. Often features dirtier, harsher sounds and faster, harder beats. Tech House DJ's include Mauro Picotto and Darren Emerson. CD: Darren Emerson - GU20 Singapore (Global Underground).

Trance - A style which has enjoyed a lot of commercial success, but has also been labeled as 'cheesy' by certain sections of the music press. Originating in Eastern Europe, Trance typically features fast beats and driving melodies, with huge buildups and breakdowns. DJ's include Tiesto and Paul Van Dyk. CD: Paul Van Dyk - The Politics of Dancing (Ministry).

Techno - Probably the hardest and fastest style to be played in mainstream clubs, Techno features driving beats and harsh melodies to create a relentlessly energetic sound. DJ's include Carl Cox and Laurent Garnier. CD: Carl Cox - Global (FFRR).

Breaks - The only one of these styles not to feature 4/4 beats, Breaks (or breakbeats) is a funky, energetic sound which is very popular at outdoor events, possibly due to its popularity with a younger crowd. Styles range from very funky, dirty tracks to fast energetic beats. DJ's include Icey and Plump DJ's. CD: DJ Icey - Essential Mix (FFRR).
